Causes of Tinnitus

What Causes Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is a physical condition, where a patient experiences ringing in the ears or noises, when actually no such noises are present in the external environment.  Tinnitus is not a disease but a manifestation of something that goes wrong with the hearing system or brain. There are several causes for the occurrence of tinnitus. Perhaps the main cause for tinnitus is loss of hearing. In order to understand why a person is suffering from tinnitus we first need to find out what has caused it. Tinnitus sometimes occurs when nerve ends get damaged due to accidents or brain tumor. Working in areas that have a high level of noise like banging and clanging as in a factory, damages the ear drum giving rise to tinnitus. Tinnitus causes also include over-indulgent drinking of alcohol and caffeine, anxiety and hypertension.

Strangely one of the causes of tinnitus is also the earwax. Inner sounds are also heard by some people suffering from ear infections. Tinnitus also occurs for patients suffering from thyroid problems, arterioscelosis, anemia and disorders of blood vessels. If the ear undergoes perforations or blockages, it could also give rise to the disorder of tinnitus to a large extent. Some more causes of tinnitus are Meniere’s disease, otosclerosis and blast injuries.

Exposure to loud noises can cause long-term damage to the inner cells of the cochlea in the ear giving rise to tinnitus. Some medications containing the ingredient quinine also gives rise to the disorder. There are also a few aspirins and antibiotics that affect the ear giving rise to tinnitus. Recurrent tinnitus can also occur due to over exposure to carbon monoxide gas.

The primary reason for tinnitus can be attributed to aging – which is a natural process. The cochlea degenerates due to aging and contributes to the tinnitus disorder.
