The Most Effective Tinnitus Treatments

There are all kinds of treatments for the ringing in the ears, the vertigo, and the headaches of tinnitus.  Some are better than others.  The most effective tinnitus treatments have been tried and found to work for many people.  

Some of the most effective tinnitus treatments have relied all or in part on counseling.  Cognitive behavior therapy works on the premise that it is the reaction to the ear noises that causes the discomfort.  The goal of this therapy is to identify those reactions, and learn new responses to the same stimuli. 

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) also uses sound generators, but also employs counselors with a strict set of guidelines for effective tinnitus treatment.  These counselors work with the aim of tutoring the patient on all the intricacies of the hearing systems of the ear and brain.  They help the patient use this knowledge to gain control over their symptoms.  It has been shown that the counseling and not the sound generator portion of this equation is the most effective. 

For people with hearing loss, hearing aids provide effective tinnitus treatment.  If that doesn’t help enough, there are tinnitus maskers that can be made in combination with hearing aids as one unit to help the condition further.  Similar devices are constructed for those tinnitus sufferers without hearing loss.  New maskers have even been devised using MP3 players.

Stress management techniques are usually effective tinnitus treatments because tinnitus is exacerbated by stress.  Some of these include doing yoga, practicing meditation, getting hypnosis, having chiropractic procedures done, and the use of acupuncture.  Any means to relieve stress will work, even if it just getting away to enjoy a sunset.

Certain medications have been used as effective tinnitus treatments.  Antihistamines are currently being used.  Sedatives have been known to have an effect on tinnitus.  Also, anti-vertigo and anti-emetic drugs have been used to treat some of the other symptoms such as loss of balance and nausea. 

Among herbal remedies cornus in combination with one of two other herbs is known as an effective tinnitus treatment.  One of these other herbs is Chinese yams.  The other is Chinese foxglove.  The foxglove combination must be prepared carefully by an expert because it is very potent; the heart medication digitalis is derived from this plant.  But, if mixed correctly, it can be an effective tinnitus treatment.

Which medications and therapies make the most effective tinnitus treatments may be somewhat controversial.  Certain methods, though, have been tried successfully more than others.  It only makes sense to look to these treatments first.
